Chapter Fourteen

SAVIOUR THE NIGHT

Byron opened his backpack and pulled out a muesli bar. It tasted stale, infused by the mouldy sandwich sitting at the bottom of his bag. He spat it out. “So, you’re coming on the camping trip then?”

“For sure. Mum’s gonna miss me but Dad jumped at the opportunity to have me and Nicole outta the cottage,” Raff replied. “Mate, I can’t wait for the weekend. Where’ll Lexi and the girls sleep?”

“In their own tent. Where else?” Raff’s mind spun on its own axis, thought Byron.

“I dunno.”

“You thought we were gonna share?”

Raff shrugged. His fantasies had been getting out of control. “I’ve been praying.”

“Sorry to disappoint you, bro. So, who is it? Lexi or Summer?” They were walking down the corridor heading to chemistry, which Byron was dreading. Raff stopped and Byron had to double back, realising he was talking to himself. Lexi floated down the corridor in a pink miniskirt and a white school top. Her hair bounced like a Pantene commercial. A stack of books rested on her waist. She waved at Byron as she passed and Raff swivelled to check out her rear view. “Lexi? Really?”

“Please, don’t hate me. I’ve been in love with her since the first grade.” Byron’s face contorted in annoyance and then he cracked up. “What’s so funny?”

“Don’t you think she’s a bit out of your league?”

“No. I mean, she dated you.”

“Yeah, I know, but it’s not like you’ve got loads of hot girls flocking to you.”

“Thanks for being so frank.”

Byron pulled on his rattail; it fell loose from its tight plait. He now had a swish of hair that sat like a limp fox’s tail down his back. “You’re the one after my girl.”

“She wasn’t yours the last time I checked.”

“We dated for two years. Isn’t there some unwritten rule you can’t go after a girl your mate has dated?”

“We weren’t mates before,” Raff softened. He was being a right knob and he knew it. The wounds Lexi had caused Byron were splattered across his face. As far as he could see, his mate wasn’t yet over his ex. “I’m sorry. I just can’t resist her - she’s so smart and funny, not to mention mouth-wateringly beautiful. Do you hate me?”

Byron slapped Raff on the back. “We’ve got through worse. If she makes you happy, you have my blessing to go for it.”

“Are you being sarcastic?”

“Nope, just conducting an experiment.”

“You do realise you’ve committed social suicide by hangin with me?” Raff said.

“Every day, mate.” Byron shook his head. “I hadn’t expected you to be so infatuated with Lexi. Looking back, I dunno why I didn’t guess earlier.”

“She flirted with me the other day after school.”

“Yeah, right,” Byron said. A twinge of jealousy struck a bolt down his spine.

Duke came out of nowhere, thrusting Raff into the grey lockers hanging from the wall like suspended coffins. “Why didja do it?” He slammed Raff’s head against a locker. Byron tried to grab Duke and pull him back. Duke snarled. “Stay out of this, Byron; it’s between me and Raff.
